t first, fortification works -when they were not performed by the inhabitants of the town- were entrusted to stonemasons or master stonemasons, who were responsible for both the plan and the construction of the building.

In some cases, these masters were of great importance to the architecture of this epoch.

Once the artillery was generalized and the construction system became more complex, architects and engineers would be in charge of the design of the building, and it was often to mistake the master builder -called clerk of works in some cases- for the designer of the fortification.
